History in the Making Opened in 1993, Duffin Meadows is the newest of the Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries, but its historic location links it to Durham Region’s pioneering past. The cemetery, just 15 minutes east of Toronto, serves Ajax, Pickering and the surrounding communities in a natural landscape of valleys, ponds, rolling meadows and mature trees.
Duffin Meadows offers:
- A full range of interment choices providing for ground burial and cremation;
- Veterans’ section;
- Historic natural setting;
- Garden of Remembrance.
| Historic Setting Duffin Meadows was originally a farm, dating back to the late 1800s. The original farmhouse has been renovated and serves as the cemetery office. Plans to develop the cemetery give priority to respecting the historic setting, as well as to harmonizing the expansion with the traditional and natural rural character of this unique property. | Ground Burial Although Duffin Meadows already offers a wide selection of ground-burial options, thus far only a portion of this 80-acre site has been developed. Ground burial options include:
- Single graves, which can accommodate interment of
two caskets and are marked with a flat memorial;
- Single graves that permit an upright monument;
- Larger lots of two or more graves that permit an upright monument;
- Urn spaces for the burial of cremated remains.
| Serving the Community In 2002, continuing the tradition of creating unique feature areas to serve the needs of all cultures and faiths, Duffin Meadows added a section designed specifically to meet the needs of the Chinese community. | Veterans’ Section Duffin Meadows has a dedicated section for Canadian and Allied veterans and their spouses. In recognition of veterans’ service to their country, the costs of interment rights in this section are reduced. | Cremation Increasingly chosen as an option in the commemorative process, cremation is simply one method of preparing remains for final disposition. Many who choose cremation will also want a lasting memorial, and a place for family and friends to go to pay tribute and remember. Often, the final resting place is in a columbarium, which is an arrangement of niches containing cremation urns.
For those who choose cremation, Duffin Meadows provides:
- Granite-fronted urn niches in an outdoor columbarium;
- Urn spaces in a feature area;
- Granite curb urn spaces bordering a tree;
- Cremorial granite bench;
- Niche inscriptions designed according to the client’s wishes.
| Garden of Remembrance A stunning cemetery within a cemetery, the Garden of Remembrance in Duffin Meadows offers a variety of interment rights in exquisite settings for those choosing cremation. |
