How long has Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries existed?
Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries was established in 1826. We will turn 183 years old in January, 2009. Our cemeteries were established as follows:
• Potter’s Field: 1826 (closed in 1875)
• Toronto Necropolis: 1850
• Mount Pleasant Cemetery: 1876
• Prospect Cemetery: 1890
• Pine Hills Cemetery: 1928
• York Cemetery: 1948
• Beechwood Cemetery: 1965
• Elgin Mills Cemetery: 1979
• Meadowvale Cemetery: 1981
• Thornton Cemetery: 1984
• Duffin Meadows Cemetery: 1993

How many cemeteries does your organization operate?
We operate ten cemeteries in the Greater Toronto Area.

Which is the largest cemetery in Toronto?
Mount Pleasant Cemetery, which runs from Yonge Street to Bayview Avenue, just north of St. Clair Avenue, and encompasses 205 acres.

Are you a private company or run by the government? Who owns you?
Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries is a not-for-profit, non-share capital corporation. We are neither owned nor subsidized by any level of government.

Which of your cemeteries still have space/graves available?
Although space for traditional ground burial is somewhat limited in the Toronto cemeteries, we have sufficient space in the GTA to last for many decades to come. For those choosing cremation, considerable space and a wide variety of options are available.

What are your office hours?
Cemetery offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m,. Monday to Saturday, with the exception of the Toronto Necropolis which is only open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m..
Corporate head office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

What are the cemetery visitation times?
Cemetery gates are opened at 8:00 a.m. and are closed as per the following schedule:
• March 1st to Daylight Saving: 6:00 p.m.
• Daylight Saving to September 30th: 8:00 p.m.
• October 1st to Eastern Standard Time: 6:00 p.m.
• Eastern Standard Time to February 28th: 5:30 p.m.

Is your cemetery non-denominational?
Yes. The Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries caters to all faiths.
