What is embalming? Embalming is the temporary disinfection, preservation and restoration of the deceased. Washing, dressing and use of cosmetics are a part of this process.
Is embalming necessary? Only if your loved one is going to be transported out of the province, and if required by the receiving country and/or the carrier transporting the deceased. Otherwise, it is your choice, although it may depend on such factors as whether or not there will be viewing of your loved one with an open casket, the length of time prior to burial or cremation, etc.
In the case of a simple cremation, do I really need a casket/container? For cremation, what is required is an enclosed, rigid container made of wood or another combustible material to allow for the dignified handling of the deceased. The type of casket or container is a personal decision. Caskets and containers are available in a wide variety of materials, and range in style from simple to elaborate.
