In 1909, a livery company owned by Scottish-born Charles Verral introduced Torontonians to the taxicab. At the wheel of the city’s first “horseless carriage for hire” (call Verral Livery at MAIN 123 to order yours) was 28-year-old Henry “Scotty” Houliston. He was also the first cab driver to drive from Toronto to New York City. His fare was a local hotelkeeper and the trip took two weeks. When the pair arrived in New York, they were feted at a City Hall reception.
   Henry Houliston, who resided at 119 Yorkville Avenue, died of blood poisoning at St. Joseph’s Hospital on December 27, 1933.
