What:
Turn key ceremony, officially opening the Visitation Centre as part of Doors Open Toronto 2011. Set in one of Canada’s most historic cemeteries as the modern interpretation of a traditional funeral home, the Visitation Centre was designed to achieve the “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design” (LEED) Silver rating while its understated design gives little hint of the building’s energy conservation technology and construction.

What:
Turn key ceremony, officially opening Toronto Necropolis as part of Doors Open Toronto 2011. One of Toronto’s oldest and most historic cemeteries, its picturesque location, collection of sculpture and Victorian buildings also make Toronto Necropolis one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the city. Some of Toronto’s finest examples of High Victorian Gothic architecture can be found in the fully restored cemetery entrance, chapel and office. The Necropolis is the final resting place of such prominent individuals as Toronto’s first mayor, William Lyon Mackenzie, journalist George Brown, founder of what is now The Globe and Mail, and Anderson Ruffin Abbot, the first Canadian-born black surgeon.
