Salvation Army Empress of Ireland Annual Memorial Service
3:00 p.m. - This Salvation Army community event takes place at the Empress of Ireland Memorial on Plot R, in Mount Pleasant Cemetery (West Side).
Considered one of the worst ship disasters in history, the Empress of Ireland, a British ship carrying 1,477 passengers and crew collided with the Storstad, a Norwegian freighter, in the gulf of the St. Lawrence on May 29, 1914. 1,012 passengers and crew drowned, including 167 Salvationists. This service commemorates that tragic event.
