Born July 23, 1866, Ida Eastwood was one of the first women graduates of the University of Toronto. In 1892 Ida, a specialist in Modern Languages was hired as second assistant to the Principal of Toronto Junction High School, for the princely sum of $800 a year. The following year, her future husband, Richard Gourlay, (born October 31, 1863, died September 23, 1925) a mathematics teacher was hired as first assistant to the principal at a salary of $1,000 per annum. In 1900, Ida resigned to marry Gourlay. Her replacement was Henrietta Charles, a roommate form university days. Tragically, the Gourlays lost their daughter in early infancy in 1903; however, their son Donald Eastwood Gourlay, born two years later, pursued a successful medical career. Ida Gertrude Eastwood died on August 24, 1944.
