John Hollinger
Section D, Lot 4
Pine Hills Cemetery
Born in Ireland, John Hollinger came to Canada in 1906 and settled in a small wooden residence he built himself at the top of Woodbine Avenue (where O’Connor Drive crosses today). As there was no public transportation to serve the needs of the sparsely settled community, Hollinger operated a “jitney” bus service which expanded over the years to a fleet of several dozen modern buses. Hollinger Bus Lines, which helped determine the growth pattern of the burgeoning community was taken over by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) in the mid-1950s. John Hollinger was also a member of East York’s municipal council for many years. The 69-year-old Hollinger died of Bronchopneumonia on August 12, 1951.
