Superintendents Alfred “Al” Stringer was the Metro intelligence officer for local Canada Customs drug teams. Stringer was responsible for several major drug seizures at Pearson International Airport, including the discovery of hashish hidden in a scuba tank. He was a leader in identifying smugglers who had swallowed drugs in order to bring them into Canada. Born and raised in Toronto, Al Stringer had worked as an inspector in the international mail section of Canada Post before joining Customs. He was briefly transferred to Northern Ontario in 1972, but returned a short time later to take up a position as a supervisor at Toronto’s airport. Stringer died of a heart attack on August 16, 1986 at the age of 45.
