William George “Bill” Knott
Section 3, Lot 1233
Beechwood Cemetery, Vaughan
William George “Bill” Knott, an avid reader who loved flowers and walks, served in both world wars. At the age of 16 he volunteered to fight in World War I with the London Scottish Regiment. At 18 he transferred to the British Artillery Regiment, serving as a private in France and Brussels. In 1972, Knott immigrated to Canada because jobs were very scarce in post-war Britain. During World War II Knott served as a sergeant with the Canadian Engineers in Ottawa. An accountant by trade, Knott was a staunch royalist who had “the thrill of his lifetime” when the Queen Mother stopped for a chat with him during her 1982 visit to Toronto. An avid Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Argonauts fan who enjoyed watching his teams on television, Bill Knott was 88 years old when he died on June 28, 1986.
