George Lew died on August 18, 1985 at the age of 62, having retired just six weeks earlier. Born in Toronto in 1923, George Lew attended Danforth Tech, and then volunteered with the Mississauga Fire Department in 1953. He went on permanent staff six years later, and took the 22-week officer training course at the fire-fighters’ college in Gravenhurst. He rose to the level of captain and, finally, district chief for the city’s east end in 1972. In 1984 he was awarded a medal by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office in recognition of both 30 years of service, and his overseas army service during World War II.
