Born in Lindsay, Ontario on May 17, 1873 Albert Matthews was educated in the local schools, joining the Matthews-Blackwell Company, cattle dealers and meat packers in Ottawa, when he was just 19. He eventually took over the company’s Toronto operations but soon decided to devote his future to the investment business, setting up his own company in 1909. Matthews was the president of Excelsior Life Insurance Company and the chairman of McMaster University in Hamilton for 25 years. He also sat on a number of committees and was especially active in the Baptist church. He was appointed the province’s 16th Lieutenant-Governor in 1937, retaining the vice-regal position until 1946. Albert Matthews died at his summer home on Lake Rosseau on August 13, 1949.
