George Durnan was the son of James Durnan, the keeper of the Gibraltar Point lighthouse on Toronto Island. While the elder Durnan looked after the light for 22 years, the son continued in that job for a remarkable 52 years.
In a newspaper interview George Durnan, who began as lighthouse keeper in 1853, recalled that as a child growing up on the island, he remembered seeing numerous Indian encampments near Blockhouse Bay at the west end of the Island. Durnan was 80 when he passed away on September 5, 1907.
