One of the best-known voices on Canadian radio, Dennett was born in Calgary, Alberta in 1916. His first “on-air” job was at the age of 16 with Calgary radio station CFCA where he was paid the princely weekly wage of $4. Over the years, he worked for various radio stations, being hired by Toronto’s CFRB in 1943. Dennett broadcast the 8 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscasts for a total of 26 years during which time he never missed a scheduled newscast. It was said that Dennett had more listeners than any other newscaster in the entire country. He was also known for his “Hockey Night in Canada” television appearances. Dennett died on August 27, 1975 of cancer.
