Born in 1873, Hatch began began the formal study of art in 1903, and became one of the first seven art specialists in Ontario. He started his teaching career at St. Mary’s Ingersoll, where he taught art and other subjects, before coming to Tyerson Public School in Toronto. He began teaching at Humberside Collegiate Institute in West Toronto in 1909. While he was a drill master in the early years, as well as teaching mathematics and English, his passion was for painting, in the realist mode. He taught his students to paint from nature as perceived, putting form and tone before exaggerated displays of colour. He died in 1949.
