The Silverthorne family from the Isle of Jersey were among the earliest settlers in Etobicoke. Joseph Silverthorne, who was born in County Haldimand, belonged to the branch of the family which had made its home in the vicinity of St. Clair and Old Weston Road. He died at the age of 57 of Bright’s disease on December 4, 1908. Silverthorne Avenue, which runs north from St. Clair Avenue, two blocks east of Old Weston Road, is named for this family.
