Toronto Necropolis
Peter Freeland was born in Scotland in 1791. He arrived in Canada with his brother William, in 1819, and they started a soap and candle factory in Montreal. In 1832, Peter moved to York (Toronto), purchased a water lot at the foot of Yonge Street, and founded his own company, Freeland’s Soap and Candle Factory. It was a major landmark along the waterfront for quite some time. Freeland Street was named for him. He died on July 29, 1861 from heart disease.
