William Foster was born on July 16, 1840. He studied law at the University of Toronto, and was called to the bar in 1861. An ardent nationalist, Foster was one of the founders of the Canada First Movement (1868 to 1875). The “Canada First” pamphlet provided Canadian nationalists with a rallying point. He was one of the founder of the “Nation” (1874 – 1876), and the National Club in Toronto. Foster died on November 1, 1888. He was survived by his wife, Margaret Bowes, and three children.
