Born in 1901 in Kishinev in Czarist Russia, Stephen Cocherva, immigrated to Toronto at the age of 20, in the wake of the Russian revolution. At some point, he changed his last name to Curtis. He attended business school, and eventually set up his own insurance firm, Curtis Insurance Ltd. He was also one of the founders of the first Russian Orthodox Church in Toronto - Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Stephen Curtis died on November 17, 1985, at the age of 84.
