Zoran “Zoki” Kosanović

A table tennis player born in Yugoslavia, Zoki Kosanović immigrated to Canada in the 1970s. Kosanović was a member of the Yugoslavian table Tennis Team that won the Silver Medal behind China in the 1975 World Championships, and a Gold Medal at the 1976 European Championships. He was a five-time Yugoslavian Singles Champion from 1975 to 1979. At one time he ranked #7 in the world. He was undefeated in the first few years of his career against all North American competitors. In 1981 and 1983 at the Commonwealth Games, he was a triple Silver Medalist in Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles. He also competed in the 1982 US Open, despite terrible back pain he suffered the day before. He defeated Mikael Appelgren 21-19 in the 5th, and went on to take the title. He was five-times the Canadian Champion and several times the North American Champion, mainly in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the early 1980s, he led the Ontario Table Tennis team to a US Open Champion. He went on to coach the Ontario Table Tennis Association in the early 1980s. After retiring, he continued coaching such teams as the Canadian Maccabiah, and Table Tennis teams in the Jewish Olympics every four years, coming 4th in 1985, a Bronze Medal in 1989, a Bronze in Mixed Doubles and a Silver in Men’s Doubles. From 1994 to 1998 he ran the soccer the soccer and table tennis programs at Upper Canada College. Zoran Kosanović died in 1998, at the age of 42, after collapsing while playing soccer.
